The Seapoint promenade is a great way to get the ball rolling. Great location, off the road so no stress about traffic, and surrounded by others doing various physical activities, you’ll have all the inspiration/ eye-candy you need. In reality the ease of this flat run will not get you all the way to race ready and you are better off doing shorter faster runs to achieve your goals.
Climbing up Lions Head is always a great option, but running around the base is a great way to rack up the kilometres while gazing over some phenomenal Cape Town Views. In just over 5 km’s you will see the glorious Clifton and Camps Bay coastline, The Majestic Table mountain and a spectacular gander over the City bowl. Much of this run is off road, making it slightly more challenging
Table mountain – Cable way road
My pick of the city bowl runs, this run offers a great view as well as a diverse run with hills and flats, so you are getting a bit of variety in your training. Drive to the boom and then run from there. Its 5 km to the end of the road and starting above gardens, you will find yourself almost above Rondebosch in 2.5 km’s so you feel like you are stacking up the miles!
A great after work option as the sun sets on the Atlantic Seaboard so you have a bit more time than the other options. From Camps Bay you start on the beachfront, rising as you head towards Clifton. Get all the Way to ‘Biskop’ stairs and add a flight of these steep stairs to really work the muscles, and head back to Camps bay with a solid 6km’s under your belt.
Getting up Kloofnek and down the other side only to turn around and do it again is a rather daunting task. Is it the most beautiful run? No. Is it the most enjoyable? Absolutely not. Will it turn you into a marathon crushing machine? Undoubtedly! Adding the hill work will help build endurance because in the race it’s the hills that knock the wind out of your sails. Conquer that and the rest is easy. Game changer/ game breaker? You can decide. It’s a challenging 7km run, but do not be ashamed to stop for an energade at the Kloofnek Superette.
Get out and try some of these, or do your favourite local run, but in order to get through this unscathed you are going to have to run! But don’t stress, do the work and it will be lots of fun! The crowds will get you there!
